Energized, honored and dedicated
Wheaton’s director of athletic communications lauded for his service to the profession
Alan “Wick” Wickström, Wheaton’s director of athletic communications, was recently honored by the international College Sports Communicators association for 25 years of service to the profession.
“I am extremely grateful and humbled to be recognized for something I have been overjoyed to do for over 30 years,” Wickström said. “I think what I’ve enjoyed most about the profession is the student-athletes and coaches that I promote. It’s hard to put into words the amount of joy I experience when I see student-athletes gain recognition for their performance in their sport as a result of their respective dedication and hard work.”
Wickström has enjoyed developing relationships with student-athletes and watching them grow.
“My relationship with the student-athletes, regardless of where I have been, has always been special … I never want them to feel like they are just another face on campus, but a valued member of our community,” he said, noting his rewarding experience of working at Wheaton.
“The people and the student-athletes here are incredibly thoughtful, driven and inspirational individuals. I am truly energized and motivated by them … I love it here and I love the staff that I work with in Athletics.”
Lisa Yenush ’90, Wheaton’s interim director of athletics, greatly appreciates Wickström’s work ethic and compassion. “I have never met anyone who works harder and takes more pride in their craft,” said Yenush about Wickström. “He genuinely cares deeply about every student-athlete and colleague he works with … His passion is infectious and he truly loves what he does. There is no one I would rather have leading our athletics communication team than Wick.”
Wickström was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Women’s Division III sports information director of the year in 2025 and was the Great Northeast Athletic Conference sports information director of the year in 2020.
A member of the Wheaton Athletics staff since 2021, Wickström started his sports information career as a student assistant at Seton Hall University in 1991, where he earned a B.A. in communication. He later led athletic communications at Fairleigh Dickinson University–Madison, UMass–Boston, Wheelock College, and Simmons University and earned an M.Ed. from Lesley University.
During his career, he has received institutional service and merit awards at Wheaton, Simmons, UMass–Boston and FDU and has worked at several NCAA championship events at all three NCAA divisions, as well as ACC women’s lacrosse and BIG EAST women’s basketball and men’s soccer tournament contests. For more than a decade, Wickström has served as a district coordinator on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Committee.
