Joining the call for constructive engagement

Dear Wheaton Community,

Attention has been focused on higher education as the federal government has taken unprecedented steps to withhold research funding and to revoke visas of international students without due process. These actions threaten academic freedom on all campuses, impact student learning, and erode the public benefits that come from education and research.

At Wheaton, we remain committed to the principles of free expression and open inquiry, to inclusive excellence, and to maintaining a learning community that is welcoming and supportive of all students.

In that spirit, I have joined nearly 200 college and university presidents ranging from the publics and the privates, the Ivies and community colleges, in signing a letter that calls for constructive engagement between higher education and federal officials. The letter, organized by the national American Association of Colleges and Universities and the renowned American Academy of Arts and Sciences, reads in part:

We are open to constructive reform and do not oppose legitimate government oversight. However, we must oppose undue government intrusion in the lives of those who learn, live, and work on our campuses.

At this critical time, it is important for us to be true to our liberal arts mission and to speak with a unified voice in defense of learning and higher education.

Sincerely,
Michaele Whelan
President
