Great Woods Chamber Orchestra performs music by Latin American composers
Wheaton’s Great Woods Chamber Orchestra presented a vibrant concert of music by Latin American composers on Dec. 10, 2010, in Weber Theater. The concert included three tangos by Argentinian master Astor Piazzolla, performed by the GWCO strings along with the German trombone virtuoso Martin Wittenberg as soloist. Sophomore flutist (and Spanish major) Alison von Rohr performed Mexican composer Max Lifchitz’s “Mosaico Latinoamericano”, a colorful combination of several folksongs brilliantly orchestrated for strings, winds, and percussion. The orchestra’s string section also presented the hauntingly beautiful “Improvisacion” by Costa Rican composer Benjamin Guttierez, as well as the North American premiere of Argentinian master Gabriel Senanes’ “Petite Suisse Suite”. In a special appearance, Wheaton’s president, the eminent cellist Ronald A. Crutcher, joined the cello section and alumna Sarah Michale Smith to perform Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos’ popular “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5.”
