Writing Fellow Publishes on Immigration

Wheaton-Emerson Writing Fellow Claudia Ward-de Leon’s short story “Outside the KFC” was published in the literary journal Bird’s Thumb this fall. Part of Ward-de Leon’s thesis at Emerson, the story explores an encounter between migrant farm workers and a woman who tries to help them following a car accident. Like the main character, Ward-de Leon was born in Guatemala.  Her First-Year Writing class “Writing about Explorations and Identity,” will take up some of her story’s themes, examining, as she puts it, “how past experiences, environments, and language have contributed to shaping us into who we are today and exploring how malleable identity may be.”
