Teaching Philosophy in Tutorials

Professor Stephen Mathis has used tutorials to teach philosophy for some time. Earlier this month, Joe Nelson ’14, joined him at a conference in Chicago to discuss the power of tutorials. Their presentation was entitled “Using Tutorials to Teach (Upper-Level) Undergraduates to Read (Advanced) Philosophy” and it took place on Friday, March 4 at the Central Division Meetings of the American Philosophy Association in Chicago. They were part of a session hosted by the APA Committee on the Teaching of Philosophy entitled “Teaching Students How to Read Philosophy.” Joe is now an MA candidate in Philosophy at American University.
