Storm Alert: Power outage update
Dear Wheaton community,
Thank you for your patience today during the power and Wi-Fi outage that was caused by an off-campus problem. Wheaton campus remains without electrical power at this time as outages are widespread throughout eastern Massachusetts, affecting more than 468,000 due to the Nor’easter that moved through Tuesday night into Wednesday morning bringing intense wind gusts and heavy rain.
The college is working with municipal authorities to get an assessment from National Grid on the estimated length of the outage to the college. Power was cut in Norton so that crews could safely work on down lines.
We are continuing to monitor the situation. We will provide additional updates regarding the status of classes and campus operations by 6 a.m. tomorrow.
- Chase will remain open for dining until 11 p.m. tonight, serving salads, grilled foods and other hot items.
- Some buildings have full electrical capacity and are accessible if needed—Mars Science Center for Technology, Haas Athletic Center, the Wallace library and Conger Commons in Pine Hall.
- The library will remain open and staffed until midnight.
The steam plant is fully functioning and temperatures tonight are forecasted to be mild in the 40s.
Please avoid using elevators and remember that candles and other flammables are not permitted. Continue to follow COVID-19 protocols, especially the wearing of masks indoors.
For your safety, please shelter in place and only leave your room or residence hall if necessary. Take care walking about the campus as debris may have fallen across pathways during the storm.
If there is an emergency or if you observe any storm damage, please call the Campus Safety emergency number at 508-286-3333.
Res Life staff members also are on duty and available for assistance. All community standards remain in place. Be smart, make good choices and take care of each other.
