The United States of America has a rich and complex history with various types of people. In order to honor the many who have and continue to contribute to our country, annual national observations are made. Similarly at Wheaton, we observe and appreciate our differences.

While peoples’ identities are always appreciated at Wheaton, the following are dates in which specific programming is held on campus in order to celebrate our nation, our campus and ourselves:

September 15 – October 15

National Latino Heritage Month – A national observation by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America including those who identify as Latino, Chicano or Hispanic.

October

National Disability Employment Awareness Month – A national observation to increase awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities.

LGBTQ Pride Month – A national observation to celebrate the progress made by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning Americans and to consider the changes still necessary to achieve full equality.  Nationally celebrated in June – enacted in 2010.

November

American Indian Heritage Month – A national observation to celebrate the heritage and contributions of the American Indian and Alaska Native peoples to America.

February

Black History Month – A national observation to recognize the importance of black history, the Civil Rights movement and the contributions of African Americans to the American history and culture.

March

Women’s History Month – A national observation to increase consciousness and knowledge of women’s history and remember the contributions of notable and ordinary women.

April

Asian, Pacific-Islander, Middle-Eastern, South Asian Heritage Month – A national observation to celebrate and recognize the enormous achievements and contributions to America. Nationally celebrated in May.
