An Evening of Kathakali

September 30, 2014

Kathakali is a dance drama from the state of Kerala in Southwest India in which scenes from Indian epics such as the Ramayana are enacted by a small group of actors with accompanying musicians. As part of the performance, the unique Kathakali style of makeup and costuming will be demonstrated by the artists Messrs. Kaladharan, Shanmughadas and Sukumaran. The artists have been trained at the Kerala Kalamandalam, the foremost institution for Kathakali instruction in India. The Wheaton performance will give the Boston area audience a rare opportunity to see this form; the performers will focus on the character of Ravana from the epic Ramayana.
