Researching Wheaton’s Japanese Print Collection

Mandy Prue, Class of 2016, was hired as a Collection Assistant at the very start of her Wheaton career. Her interest in Japanese art and culture led Professor Leah Niederstadt, Curator of the Permanent Collection, to task Mandy with inventorying and cataloguing Wheaton’s collection of Japanese prints, which includes 18th and 19th century ukiyo-e works of art as well as contemporary woodblock prints. During her senior year, the multi-year project culminated in Mandy enrolling in a Spring 2016 independent study with Dr. Robin Tierney, Visiting Assistant Professor of Japanese. As part of the course and in her role as Curatorial Intern with the Permanent Collection, Mandy curated a display of prints in Watson Fine Arts and an online exhibition. She plans a career in the museum field, ideally in an Asian art museum.
